Stress is the Mother of Aging and Disease

October 29, 2017 Joe Brady

According to evolutionary biologist George Baker aging is defined as “the decline over time in the fitness of an organism to deal with the stress of daily life”. An ancient maxim in Chinese medicine runs “Wind is the mother of aging and disease.” Wind being the Chinese term for stress, both external environmental stress, and internal emotional stresses are like the wind and a harbinger of change and stress. Stress-induced psychological and physiological disorders top the list of health problems in in the world today.

Life is stressful, and our ability to handle the stress of daily life impacts directly on health and longevity. While thought of as a single cause of disease, stress can have ramifications for any and all of the organ systems in the body.

Liver Patterns

Anger, frustration and resentment may cause stagnation of Liver-Q and Liver-Yang to rise. With time, this may lead to Liver-Wind. (hypertension and strokes)

Spleen Patterns

Worry, pensiveness, brooding and excessive mental work weaken the Spleen and may cause gastrointestinal problems.

Kidney  Patterns

A combination of overwork, emotional stress and excessive sexual activity are the most common cause of Kidney-Yin deficiency or accelerated aging.

Heart Patterns

Long-standing grief, sadness and anxiety may all lead to Heart-Fire and mania, depression, insomnia and palpitations.

Lung Patterns

Worry  affects the Lungs directly and it knots Qi, preventing the descending of Lung-Qi and is a frequent emotional cause of allergies, asthma and a  dry and irritating cough. External stress like changes in the weather give rise to colds and flu.
