Physical Activity Improves Brain Function

As if there were not enough reasons already to increase your physical activity. More and more studies are showing physical activity improves brain function in those who are moderately physically active. One Cochrane analysis of eleven randomly controlled clinical trials showed there is evidence that aerobic physical activities which improve cardiorespiratory fitness are beneficial for cognitive function in healthy older adults, with effects observed for motor function, cognitive speed, delayed memory functions and auditory and visual attention. We used to think that smart people were physically active but it may be that physically active people become smarter. (more…)

Healthy Aging and Diet

Modern research on a wide variety of different animal species has shown that calorically restricted otherwise known as nutrient dense diets can extend the healthy portion of lifespan and even extend genetic lifespan. What we already know is that reducing empty calories from the diet and replacing those calories with higher levels of nutrition can have dramatic effects on health and aging. Whether maximum genetic lifespan can be extended in humans still needs much more research. Mind/Body Practices and Cancer

Though never to be used as a substitute for medical treatment, mind/body practices such as Tai Chi, Yoga, and meditation have proven to be valuable adjunct therapies for people with cancer. Actually, we all get cancer at least a half a million times in our lives. That according to the late Nobel prizes winning tumor biologist B.P. Medawar. Our immune systems are actually quite effective in preventing full-blown cancer from arising, but every once in a while one slips through. Cultivating a strong mind and a strong body is essential when surviving cancer.
