“The times make the hero and the hero makes the times” Old T’ai chi sayingHuman beings have a great capacity to adapt to changes and I have full confidence that people will rise to any challenge in the future. But in order to do that we have to have a future. We cannot continue treating our planet like a garbage dump pretending to be ignorant of the damage we are causing. Go Outside and Play
by Joseph Brady
In Traditional Chinese Medicine one whole group of therapeutic exercises involve what is called “Nature’s Therapy”. The ancient Chinese believed that there is something inherently therapeutic about being around nature. Sun bathing, air baths, water therapy even gardening have their place in the constellation of therapeutic practices that comprise Traditional Chinese Medicine. Nature’s Therapy is one reason Tai Chi and Qigong are traditionally practiced outside in parks. In addition to the normal benefits of exercise, going outside provides additional benefits. Getting out in nature can provide much needed stress relief in our high-tech, high-stress lives. Being in nature’s slower cycles can offset the hectic pace of modern life. Hanging out in natural settings has very healthy effects on physiology. Being around plants can reduce heart rates and blood pressure. Taking care of a garden gives you something to focus on besides your troubles. Walking and taking time to smell the roses are better ways to deal with stress than hollering and fretting.
In addition to acupuncture there are many other natural pain relief modalities used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Acupressure and Cupping have also been found to be effective treatments for natural pain relief.
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses many other modalities besides acupuncture. One review of 75 studies covering all aspects of TCM in individuals with neck pain or low back pain. This review found that acupuncture, acupressure, and cupping can be effective in the treatment of pain. Other natural pain relief treatments, such as gua sha, tai chi, qigong, and manipulation have also showed good effect and further studies on these treatments are needed.

Community Health Promotion Can Work… It takes a long time, but ‘Yes We Can’ create healthier communities!
by Jacqui Shumway
In 2005, I was asked to become a part of a community health promotion project attempting to promote healthy lifestyles in the my economically diverse Park Hill Denver neighborhood. The “Park Hill Thriving Communities Summary Report Progress and Accomplishments 2006-2011” was released in 2012 and shows that community based programs can be effective in increasing physical activity and healthier lifestyles over the long haul. A recent discussion on a neighborhood social media site made me realize now many of my new neighbors do not know the history of efforts to make Park Hill the thriving and vibrant community it is today.
“A disease of prosperity, obesity, threatens to overwhelm our health care system.”
Weight loss, need not be the hardship most people perceive it to be. Changing your lifestyle can also be reframed as an adventure in active healthy living.
Life is Qi! Life is energy! Calories are just a measurement of energy and the fact is that to be successful at weight loss the energy going into the system (calories) must be less than or at least match the energy going out (exercise). Regular enjoyable physical activity, combined with a delicious but sensible diet can help you burn calories, reduce fat, and lower your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. (more…)
