Tuesdays 9:30am-11:30am – Park Hill United Methodist Church 5209 Montview Blvd. Four Tuesday’s October 15 – November 5

The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of the way we live our lives on a daily basis. For decades, everywhere and everyone has been telling us to stay healthy, but the major barriers of convenience, cost, and lack of desire continue to get in the way of our best intentions to stay healthy. “Squaring the Curve” is the term used when our lifestyle improves the healthy, active, and quality portion of our lifespan. This four-week course will address ways to improve health and find the joy in aging each and every day. Using art, music and dance, each class will cover practical techniques that can reduce visits to the urgent care center by taking control of your own aches and pains with evidence-based alternatives. When you finish, you will know more about the following natural pain relief options: acupressure points, tai chi, massage, exercise, yoga, qigong.

Integrative Medicine and Climate Change

Already climate change is becoming a major health problem around the world. In my own Chinese medicine clinic I have seen more respiratory diseases this last spring and early summer than ever before. The 2015 Lancet Commission on Health and Climate Change concluded that addressing climate change is the greatest public health opportunity of the 21st century, and failure to adequately address it could undo most of the progress in global health over the past century.

A majority of health care providers report they are already seeing health harms from climate change among their own patients – most commonly in the form of increased cardiorespiratory disease (related to air quality and heat), more severe and longer lasting allergy symptoms, and injuries attributed to extreme weather.

Slow Aging in Mind and Body

The elixir of life and the fountain of youth have been sought for centuries by those who wish to stay young . It still seems that each month we hear about a new anti aging drug or product that promises the proverbial youth in a bottle. There is one anti-aging therapy that has been around for over 600 years. It is receiving a lot of new interest. This “newly discovered therapy” is actually the ancient Chinese exercise of Tai-chi (pronounced Tie-chee). Translated, Tai-chi means ” the supreme ultimate exercise”, and recent research is providing evidence that Tai-chi may well live up to that name. Recent research has shown Tai Chi may be able to slow the underlying process of aging itself.

Tips for Controlling Inflammation

Inflammation is an important part of your immune system. When there is an injury the body responds by inflaming the area so antibodies can enter the area and healing can take place. When there is a virus or bacteria injuring the body the body fights it by inducing systemic inflammation in the form of a fever. The fever creates an environment where germs cannot thrive making it easier for the body to kill them. I most of the time the inflammation is temporary and beneficial. But inflammation can also be chronic and become the problem rather than the solution. Fortunately, there are many things we can do for ourselves, read on for easy to use and evidence-based tips for controlling inflammation.

Recent NCCIH Studies on Tai Chi

Recent studies on Tai Chi funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) have added to the growing knowledge of the potential benefits of some mind and body practices and provided insights into how these practices may work. One study involved a detailed examination of the effects of tai chi training on gait (the way a person walks). The study showed that as little as 6 months of tai chi might improve an important indicator called gait dynamics, which shows how well a person can walk. Tai chi may exert its effects by maintaining or improving flexibility to respond and adapt to unpredictable changes in terrain, stimuli, and stresses while walking.
